Character Counts (July 6 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

James 5:12

Today’s Thought

How much do people trust you? If you tell them you’re going to do something, do they believe you’ll do it? Or do you have to rely on some kind of pinky swear to convince them you mean what you say? James 5:12 isn’t just about words, though. It’s about the character lying at the foundation of those words. Your character should be of such quality that a simple “yes” or “no” is enough for someone. That’s a high bar to achieve, but it’s possible with God’s help. Work today on following through with actions that fulfill your promises to others. Let your character develop into one that needs nothing more than a “yes.”

Prayer

Father, help me to be a person of my word. Do not let me carelessly make promises that I know I can’t keep, but help me be true to my word.
