Deja Vu (July 26 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Genesis 20:1-2

Today’s Thought

How many times have we done it? We fall into a sin and feel the consequences and then swear we’ll never do it again. How quickly we forget and fall back into the same patterns. The same happened with Abraham. As he and Sarah approach the Negeb, he fears for his life because of Sarah and tells the king that she is his sister. Haven’t we seen this before? Didn’t Abraham learn from his dealings with Pharoah? Apparently not. Fortunately, God intervenes again to rescue Abraham from disaster.

We all do it. No one is beyond this. As Proverbs 26:11 says, “Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.” We are all fools who repeat our follies, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t overcome it through God’s help. We have to let go of our need to take control ourselves and let God take over.

Prayer

Father, help me be mindful of my shortcomings. May I give them over to your mercy and follow your guidance for my life.
