Praying Unselfishly (July 5 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

James 4:3

Today’s Thought

Have you ever asked God for something and not received an answer? Or maybe it was an answer you didn't expect or didn't want. It can be frustrating when it feels like God isn't listening to us. It may be because we're praying for the wrong thing. James says that we don't get what we ask for because we're asking selfishly. Obviously, praying to win the lottery is a selfish prayer, but what about prayers for healing or an end to suffering and oppression? Those can be selfish in their own ways because we're praying for our will to be done rather than God’s.

Keep in mind that God's wisdom and understanding are infinitely greater than ours. If it feels like God isn't listening, try praying a different prayer. James tells us in chapter 1, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Pray for his wisdom to know how to pray for a situation.

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom and understanding to know what your will is in the situations I'm praying for. Help me see things from your side of eternity rather than my limited, selfish perspective.
