Where Are You? (July 9 Devotional)
Scripture Meditation
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
Genesis 3:8-9
Today’s Thought
When we mess up, it’s natural for us to want to hide. We don’t want to look imperfect, so we hide. We hide through blame, through facades, through deflection, and various other means. We don’t want to look imperfect, so we try to take the attention off ourselves. Especially when it comes to God. We can have the tendency to see God as the lightning bolt-throwing judge waiting for us to mess up so that He can smite us in his wrath.
And yet, when Adam and Eve hid from God after the first big mess-up, He reacted differently. He asked a simple question: “Where are you?” God sought out Adam and Eve, even when they sinned. Just like the father waiting for the prodigal son, God wants to be in relationship with us. That’s always been His goal. He will always seek us out. We just have to come out of hiding.
Prayer
Lord, help me to remember that your top priority is a relationship with me. Let me not be afraid of your judgment but come to you with a humble heart and confess my sins to you.
