Fear and Worry (July 18 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”

Genesis 12:11-13

Today’s Thought

God told him to pack up his bags and leave his home country, and he did it. God told him that he would go to a place God would show him, and he went. He trusted God even though he didn’t have a clue where God was taking him. If he could have faith in God in that situation, surely Abram wouldn’t have any doubts ever. But it happened. Perhaps not doubt so much as forgetting.

Abram and his wife are approaching Egypt, and suddenly fear and worry take over. Abram fears for his life, but rather than relying on God’s protection, he relies on worldly solutions by deceiving Pharoah. He forgets God’s promise to make him into a great nation.

Too often, we forget what we have in God. We let worry and fear take over instead of remembering the promises and power of God. Don’t forget that you have the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God with us always.

Prayer

Lord, help me trust in you and not worldly wosdom, even when things seem helpless. Let my trust and faith in you overcome my worries and fears.
