Trust Fall (July 21 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Genesis 15:3-6

Today’s Thought

Have you ever done a trust fall? You stand with your back to a group of people, cross your arms in front of your chest, and fall back. Easy enough, right? And yet, it’s hard for a lot of people to do. Even though you know you have a group behind you to catch you, doubt always seems to rear its ugly head. You turn to make sure everyone is still there. You put your arms out to brace yourself for a fall. You step back because you don’t think they will catch you.

God gave Abram his own sort of trust fall. Abram’s heir at the time was his next of kin, but God told him that his own son would be his heir. That’s a stretch for someone who was getting up there in years. Abram trusted God, though, and Genesis 15:6 tells us that it was credited to him as righteousness. In other words, that simple act of faith made Abram fully right with God. Even in the Old Testament, it was all about faith. It wasn’t about a sacrificial system. It wasn’t about good deeds. It wasn’t about being a “good person.” It’s all about complete trust in God.

Prayer

Lord, give me the faith to trust in your promises.
