God Sees Us (July 22 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered.

Genesis 16:13-14

Today’s Thought

Why do bad things happen to good people? It’s an age-old question that really doesn’t have a good answer. More important is probably our responnse when bad things happen? How do we response when bad things happen to good people? In Genesis 16, Hagar is an innocent victim caught in the midst of a crisis of faith between Abram and his wife Sarai. They both doubt that God will fulfill his promise, so Sarai offers her maid, Hagar, as a potential solution to the problem. However, when Hagar conceives a child, Sarai treats her so harshly that Hagar flees. An angel appears to Hagar to comfort her. Hagar realizes the God sees her, and calls the place Beer-lahai-roi (“the well of the Living One who sees me”).

When we’re going through difficult times, it’s easy to want to run and hide. It’s easy feel like God has turned his back on us, that he’s not there with us. It’s the same feeling that Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane. Know, however, that God does see you. Whatever you may be going through, whatever hurt you’re experiencing. God sees you. He weeps with you. He’s right there with you.

Prayer

Father, remind me that you are always with me. Even when it seems like you don’t see me, I know that you will never leave me or forsake me.
