Love and Grief (July 12 Devotional)
Scripture Meditation
And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
Genesis 6:6
Today’s Thought
Grief is an interesting idea. For grief to exist, there has to be a depth of love. We dont’t grieve over things that don’t mean anything to us. The deeper the love, the deeper the grief. In Genesis 6, God grieves over the corruption of mankind. God’s regret over creating humanity came not from anger and hatred, but from a deep love. That’s why it grieved him so much to see what had become of his creation.
God’s not standing over us waiting for us to mess up. In fact, the opposite is true. He’s doing, and has done, everything he can to keep us from experiencing inevitable judgement. His love for us is so deep that we can’t possibly fathom it. Remember that today.
Prayer
Lord, help me to remember that when I grieve you, it’s only because you love me so much. Forgive me where I stumble.
