The One-Sided Covenent (July 15 Devotional)

Scripture Meditation

I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Genesis 9:13-16

Today’s Thought

A covenant is promise put together by two parties as a means of moving forward. A sign would then be set up as a visual reminder of that covenant. That way whenever either party sees the sign, they would be reminded of the promises they made. In the same way, God sets up a covenant with Noah in Genesis 9 in which he promises to never again flood the earth in judgment. The sign of this, a bow in the sky. His bow is hung up without an arrow nocked.

The interesting this about this covenant is that it is a one-sided one. There is no stipulation for what mankind must do in order to maintain this pact. The rainbow simply reminds us of the peace that God has promised us. And when he sees the rainbow, it’s a continual reminder of the peace he promises.

Prayer

Lord, help me remember that peace with you comes at no cost. I only have to accept it from you.
